In cadrul sesiunii extraordinare SOMS de miercuri 18 martie, vor avea ocazia sa prezinte oral si cea mai buna prezentare va ramane in competitie.

Instructiuni prezentare orala:

Brainstorming on improving sleep efficiency

Our brains need to sleep. Our society pushes us to do more and sleep less. We would like to use the BAW opportunity to increase the public understanding of sleep and what neuroscience can teach us to get the most out of our sleep time.

This is the 6th consecutive year when the National Neurosciences Society of Romania and SOMS organize BAW events with international participation. The event will be held at the main auditorium at the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy Bucharest. As the popularity of BAW in Bucharest is constantly increasing, we expect around 200 participants for this year’s manifestation. Local media will be invited to cover these events and to interview the main speakers.

Main event (March 20th, 3 p.m.):

We plan to organize the main event as a Brainstorming session.

Students from health sciences (mainly but not limited to medicine, biology, psychology and sociology) will be encouraged (posters, forum postings, newsletters) to send by February 20 a scientific abstract for a 10-minute presentation on a practice to improve sleep efficiency in our everyday life: (e.g Does power napping help? Should we drink coffee before going to nap? Should we count sheep? Should we listen to music? Should we jog before going to bed? etc.

The best 10 abstracts will be selected (by March 1st) to be presented as oral 10-minute slideshows on the main BAW event . Presentations in both Romanian and in English are accepted and the chosen language will in no way influence our evaluation. Each presentation will be followed by a ~10-minute debate with a broad panel of invited local and international experts including neuroscientists, sleep physicians and psychologists.

As an incentive, the best presentation will be awarded.

Registration for the BAW2009 competition was closed on March 8th 23:59 (GMT+1). The finalists will be notified of selection by March 13th.

Satellite events:

Neuroscience Lab Open Day(March 18th, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.; Ana-Maria Zagrean, Leon Zagrean): Medical students will be guided in the Center for Excellence in Neuroscience, Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Extraordinary SOMS meeting (March 18th, 6 p.m., Physiology Library, 1st floor)

1. BAW 2009 competition preselection: 6 ideas on how to get a better sleep

2. Sex differences in structural and functional brain development (student: Ioana Goganau)

3. Attention! There is a singing (student: Liana Nedescu)

Workshop on power napping (March 19th, 5 p.m., Physiology Library, 1st floor ; Mihai Moldovan, Ioana Mindruta and the SOMS): Participants will be involved in the theory of sleep quantification, debate the problems of designing a sleep study followed by a “hands-on” involvement in polysomnography in the sleep laboratory. Such manifestations were popular during previous BAW arrangements at our university, leading to involvement of students with no previous research experience in projects finalized with published papers in international peer-reviewed journals (Ioan S et al. 2007; Ilie A. et al 2007) where EDAB support was acknowledged.
